District Overview
Saanich is one of the largest municipalities in the Greater Victoria region, located on southern Vancouver Island and surrounding much of the City of Victoria. Officially known as the District of Saanich, the municipality stretches from the urban edge of downtown Victoria north toward the Saanich Peninsula and west toward View Royal. The area includes a wide range of neighbourhoods, from established suburban communities and coastal residential areas to commercial centres and institutional campuses. Major corridors such as Shelbourne Street, Quadra Street, and McKenzie Avenue connect Saanich to surrounding municipalities, making it an important hub within the Capital Regional District.
The municipality is also known for its extensive parks, natural landscapes, and recreational opportunities. Popular destinations such as Mount Douglas Park, Cadboro-Gyro Park, and the Lochside Regional Trail provide access to forests, beaches, and scenic viewpoints throughout the district. Saanich is home to the University of Victoria and several major shopping and service centres, contributing to a vibrant mix of residential, educational, and commercial activity. With its combination of established neighbourhoods, green space, and convenient access to both downtown Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula, the district offers a diverse and well-connected place to live within the region.
